Hundreds Descend on NJ Walmart as Part of Nationwide Black Friday Protest

Workers and their supporters gathered at the North Bergen Walmart Supercenter to protest low wages as part of a nationwide demonstration.Joining their ranks were protesters furious about the jury decision not to indict Darren Wilson in the Ferguson shooting of Michael Brown. The nationwide protests gained steam online as well, trending on Facebook under the hashtag #WalmartStrikers.

Clergy and community leaders including Bertha Lewis, President of the Black Institute and Randi Weingarten, President of the American Federation of Teachers showed their support of the protesters in North Bergen Friday.

Friday’s National Black Friday Protest is being called the biggest strike in Walmart’s company history, and it falls on the most important retail day of the year.

Organizers are planning 1,600 strikes and protests across the United States, including one in Hawaii and Alaska.

Their goal is for all Walmart workers to get $15 an hour and full time work.

Walmart makes $16 billion annually as a whole which builds Walmart’s owners’ $150 billion fortune.

A majority of Walmart workers make less than $25,000 a year.
